What is an exercise physiologist?
An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is a university-trained allied health professional accredited by Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA), requiring a minimum four-year university qualification and expertise in using evidence-based exercise as medicine to prevent, manage, and treat chronic disease, injury, disability, and complex health conditions across the lifespan.
What’s the difference between an Exercise Physiologist, a Physiotherapist and Personal Trainer?
- Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP): Specialises in the assessment, prescription, and progression of exercise for people with injuries, chronic diseases, disabilities, and complex health conditions to improve function, health, and quality of life.
- Physiotherapist: Primarily focuses on diagnosing, treating, and rehabilitating injuries, pain, and movement disorders using hands-on therapy, education, and exercise-based rehabilitation.
- Personal Trainer (PT): Focuses on improving general fitness, strength, body composition, and performance in otherwise healthy individuals through exercise coaching and lifestyle guidance.
ESSA accreditation is the national professional standard that ensures an Accredited Exercise Physiologist has completed the required university education, clinical training, and ongoing professional development to safely prescribe exercise for people with complex health and medical conditions.
What Does an Exercise Physiologist Actually Do?
Many people have heard of an Exercise Physiologist (EP), but aren’t quite sure what happens during a session or who should see one.
At VIBE Health & Performance, our Accredited Exercise Physiologists combine clinical knowledge with practical coaching to help people move better, get stronger, recover from injury, and improve their long-term health.
What Happens During Your First Appointment?
Your first session is all about understanding where you’re at now and where you want to get to.
We begin with a comprehensive assessment that may include:
- Discussion of your injury, pain, medical history, training background, and goals
- Movement and mobility assessment
- Strength testing
- Functional capacity testing
- Balance, coordination, and cardiovascular assessments where appropriate
From there, we work together to establish clear goals and develop an individualised exercise program designed around your needs.
Unlike many clinics, we’re fortunate to have direct access to a fully equipped gym environment. This means your rehabilitation and training can occur in the same setting where you’ll eventually return to performing.
At our Homebush clinic, we utilise:
- Barbells and weightlifting platforms
- Benches
- Leg press
- Leg extension and hamstring curl machines
- Cable machines
- TRX suspension trainers
- Smith machine
- Aqua bags
- Cardiovascular equipment
- Functional training space
This allows us to progress patients from basic rehabilitation through to high-level strength and performance training under one roof.
Most clients complete a structured 6-8 week block where exercises are progressively advanced based on their capacity, symptoms, and goals. Regular reassessments ensure you’re making measurable progress and moving toward the outcomes that matter most to you.
And because rehabilitation doesn’t need to feel clinical and boring, the VIBE experience includes the little extras too. Enjoy a coffee, a Biscoff cookie, and access to our compression boots to assist with post-session recovery and help you feel your best.
Who Benefits From Seeing an Exercise Physiologist?
Athletes Wanting To Go Beyond Rehab
Many athletes finish rehabilitation but never truly return to their previous level of performance.
This is where Exercise Physiolmbogy can bridge the gap.
At VIBE, we work with athletes across a range of sports on:
- Strength and conditioning
- Return-to-sport planning
- Running and sprint mechanics
- Performance testing
- Injury risk reduction
- Load management
- Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training
Whether you’re returning from injury or simply looking to improve performance, our goal is to build stronger, more resilient athletes capable of performing at their highest level.
People Living With Chronic Health Conditions
Exercise is one of the most powerful medical interventions available.
Research consistently demonstrates that structured exercise can significantly improve outcomes for conditions such as:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Cardiovascular disease
- Osteoarthritis
- Chronic pain
- Cancer recovery and survivorship
- Neurological conditions
This isn’t simply “keeping active” or going for a walk.
Exercise Physiologists prescribe exercise with the same level of precision that medications are prescribed—using the right type, intensity, frequency, and progression to achieve a therapeutic outcome.
For many chronic conditions, exercise is considered a first-line evidence-based treatment.
Post-Surgical And Rehabilitation Patients
Recovery doesn’t end when the surgery is over.
Whether you’ve undergone:
- ACL reconstruction
- Joint replacement surgery
- Shoulder surgery
- Back surgery
- Tendon repair procedures
Exercise plays a critical role in restoring strength, function, confidence, and ultimately returning you to the activities you enjoy.
At VIBE, we commonly work alongside physiotherapists and surgeons throughout the rehabilitation process.
Physiotherapists often assist with the early stages of recovery, pain management, and restoring movement, while Exercise Physiologists play a major role in rebuilding strength, work capacity, fitness, and sport-specific performance.
For athletes returning to sport, strength testing, functional testing, and progressive exposure to sport demands are essential.
Simply feeling “better” is not enough.
We do not clear athletes for return to sport unless they have demonstrated the physical capacity required to safely tolerate the demands of their sport.
Desk Workers And Active Everyday People
Not everyone who sees an Exercise Physiologist is an athlete.
Many of our clients simply want to:
- Stay strong as they age
- Reduce aches and pains
- Improve posture and movement quality
- Build confidence in the gym
- Increase energy levels
- Improve bone density and muscle mass
- Maintain an active lifestyle
This is an area we’re continuing to expand at VIBE.
Whether you’re spending long hours behind a desk, returning to exercise after years away, or simply wanting expert guidance, our Exercise Physiologists can help you build a stronger, healthier body for the long term.
The goal isn’t just rehabilitation.
It’s helping you move well, stay active, and continue doing the things you enjoy for decades to come.
Exercise Physiologist vs Personal Trainer: Which Do You Need?
Both Exercise Physiologists and Personal Trainers use exercise to help people achieve their goals, but the training and scope of practice are very different.
Personal Trainers are experts in general fitness, strength training, weight loss, and helping healthy individuals exercise safely and effectively.
Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) complete a minimum four-year university degree and are trained to prescribe exercise for people with injuries, chronic diseases, disabilities, and complex medical conditions.
A simple way to think about it:
See a Personal Trainer if:
- You are generally healthy
- You want to improve fitness
- You want help with weight loss
- You want accountability in the gym
- You want a structured training program
See an Exercise Physiologist if:
- You have an injury
- You have persistent pain
- You are recovering from surgery
- You have diabetes, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, osteoporosis or another medical condition
- You need rehabilitation before returning to sport
- You want evidence-based exercise prescribed around your health needs
Many people work with both. An Exercise Physiologist can help you manage the medical or rehabilitation side of things, while a Personal Trainer can assist with ongoing fitness once you’ve reached that stage.
Exercise Physiologist vs Physiotherapist: Where Do They Overlap?
Exercise Physiologists and Physiotherapists often work with similar conditions and frequently collaborate throughout a patient’s recovery.
Physiotherapists are highly skilled in:
- Assessment and diagnosis of injuries
- Acute injury management
- Manual therapy and hands-on treatment
- Pain management
- Early-stage rehabilitation
Exercise Physiologists are highly skilled in:
- Long-term exercise rehabilitation
- Strength and conditioning
- Return-to-sport programming
- Chronic disease management
- Exercise prescription for complex health conditions
A common pathway may involve seeing a physiotherapist in the early stages of an injury before transitioning to an Exercise Physiologist as rehabilitation progresses and exercise becomes the primary treatment focus.
At VIBE Health & Performance, our Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, and Exercise Physiologists work together under one roof to provide a seamless rehabilitation experience.
Cost, Rebates and Referrals
Do You Need A Referral?
No.
You do not need a referral to see an Exercise Physiologist privately.
You can book directly with our team and begin treatment immediately.
The only time a referral is required is when accessing Medicare rebates under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plan.
A CDM Plan is arranged through your GP and is available for eligible patients living with chronic or complex medical conditions that have been present, or are expected to be present, for six months or longer.
Private Health, Medicare, DVA and NDIS
Exercise Physiology services are supported by a number of funding pathways.
Private Health Insurance
Most extras health insurance policies include rebates for Exercise Physiology services. The amount will vary depending on your level of cover.
Medicare CDM Plans
Eligible patients may receive up to five Medicare-subsidised allied health appointments per calendar year through a GP Management Plan and Team Care Arrangement.
DVA
Exercise Physiology services may be available to eligible Department of Veterans’ Affairs clients with the appropriate referral.
NDIS
Exercise Physiology services can also be accessed through eligible NDIS plans where exercise intervention forms part of the participant’s goals and support needs.
Our team can help determine which funding options may apply to your situation.
